Choosing Paint Colours for your homE

As real estate agents we often are asked, what colour should I paint my home? Should I consider a panel for the walls or keep it simple? The answer can vary depending on why and how you are painting your home. The following points need to be taken into account:

Natural Lighting

Does you home have a sufficient amount of natural light coming in? If you were to paint a dark room in dark colours then this would make the room feel moody and cold, some people choose to paint theatre rooms in a dark colour purely for the fact that it works for the enjoyment of the theatre room however would you paint a dark bedroom with dark walls? Probably not.

Be wary of the bright colours

When we say "bright", by definition or example we are talking purples, greens anything that you might not be classified as neutral. Keep in mind though it is easy to add colour and style through textiles and artwork, perhaps if you love a popping colour you can settle to use it on furniture pieces or artwork. It is important to keep in mind the space you are working with. If the space is not large, then these “bright” colours will overshadow it.

Test the shade

How many times have you bought a colour, painted and then it's dried to be a different colour or even looks different in the space? Test the paint out and paint patches on the wall. Leave to dry and see how you feel. Another approach, when people are unsure nowadays the “go-to” is a mood board. Set up a mood board with pictures of your furniture, drapes colour, wall colours and see how they match. Although this on a small scale it should help give an idea if they clash or don’t. There is also a huge range of apps available no that can help you. These are:

Avoid going too matchy-matchy

This is the job where interior designers mostly have this knack for making the most outrageous patterns, colours work in the most elegant way. It is very simple to get caught up and make everything match perfectly however that doesn’t always see the best result. We are so blessed to be able to refer to Pinterest these days but keep in mind sometimes even that is deceptive, sometimes they only show a small portion of the room, try and find full room pictures and see how you can integrate different pieces.

Going White, doesn’t always mean brighter!

It is on our thought pattern that if we have a small space, we have to paint it white to make it feel bigger. That is actually the opposite! While white is an easy versatile colour or base, it can also be very static. With dark colours as the light changes in the room so does the wall colour. Dark colours instead of reflecting the light it absorbs the light, the walls of the room are less clearly marked and can give the illusion of space.

Two colours in one room?

Using colour blocks you can not only use the colour to outline different spaces but also add it as an architectural feature. Often people turn to using wallpaper for the same purpose however with the advancement of painting techniques and not only that the use of additional textures and shapes you can integrate multiple colours to create interest.
