When selling a home, first impressions do matter. If potential buyers are impressed with the exterior of the home, then they will be more enticed to see what the rest of the house has to offer. Whereas, if the house is run down on the outside then people may assume the inside is the same. There are many ways owners can improve the curb appeal of their home, which are easy, inexpensive, and can boost market value and attract more buyers. Read below on how.

PAINT THE FRONT DOOR

Painting the front door is an easy way to improve curb appeal. It is the most focal element of the front of your home and the space you will be greeting all your potential buyers at. Splash it with a fresh coat of paint that blends into the rest of the home's colour scheme or choose a colour that makes it pop. Clean any dirty spots on the door and use a metal polish on the door handle. Doing the little things like this, shows the buyers from the very beginning that you care about the appearance of your home.

MAILBOX MAKEOVER

The small things matter. So, if you have a rusty old letter box that looks like it’s going to topple over at any point, it may not set off a good impression on the rest of the home. You can usually pick up post-mounted letter boxes from your local hardware store for as low as $15. Some other ways to spruce up the box would be planting some beautiful flowers surrounding the base of it or upgrading the house number that sits on the front of it.

NEATEN THE GARDENS

If the front of your house consists of lots of plants, shrubs, and flowers then it would be a good idea to neaten them up and keep up regular maintenance. If plants are looking overgrown hanging over garden beds then a great tip would be to replant them in pot plants, which makes them more controllable and look neater. Having low-maintenance gardens can be a big selling point for a lot of people, so doing things like mowing and edging your lawn regularly, removing weeds, and pruning oversized plants can create the illusion that its low maintenance whilst also still bringing in that curb appeal with how beautiful the landscaping is kept.

REFRESH OUT-DOOR FURNITURE

Having a whole bunch of unnecessary furniture or play equipment scattered over the front lawn can look tacky and give off the impression that the inside might be crowded and messy. The idea of outdoor furniture is to create that porch appeal and less is more in most cases. If you are fortunate enough to have a bigger-sized porch invest in a small coffee table and chairs or a cosy porch swing that creates a simple but inviting environment that people want to approach.

POWER WASH THE EXTERIOR

Over time algae and mold can build up, so ensuring you do a regular power wash of the exterior, especially along the drive and pathways, can help you avoid any of the nasties building up or any unwanted stains from rising. Not only does power washing help improve curb appeal and helps maintain property value, but can also help avoid things that can sometimes go unnoticed like cobwebs, dust, and dirt.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Curb appeal does not have to end once the sun goes down. Instead, illuminate any pathways with lights or add accent lighting to trees or the house like wall sconces, floodlights, recessed lights, etc. Solar outdoor lights are a perfect way to add curb value, are budget-friendly, and are easy to install.

FRESH COAT OF PAINT

If the colour of your exterior is looking washed out, then it may be a good idea to give it a fresh coat of paint. It can give off a polished appearance which can convince buyers that your home is in great condition. There are also the added benefits that it helps seal out moisture and creates protection from any damage that may come from weather and other external factors.

When you are selling your home it can be easy to forget about the simple things like curb appeal. There may be concerns inside the home that you are focused on, but putting your attention on the small details of the exterior of your home can be the reason why buyers enter your home in the first place.
